Speed Limits and Fines Flashing orange lights and School buses Driving in the rain and parking Drink and Drive Laws Accidents Speed limits are always well marked with black numbering on white signs. The police are pretty hot on speeding and on-the-spot fines are steep: $57 for being stopped in the first place, plus $5 for every mile an hour you are over the limit (with fines doubled where there are roadwork's). Limits vary from 44 to 70mph on the Interstates (and can change frequently), where there is also a 40mph MINIMUM speed, to just 15 or 20mph in some built-up areas Flashing orange lights suspended over the road indicate a school zone so proceed with caution, while school buses CANNOT be overtaken in either direction when they are unloading and have their hazard lights on. U-turns are forbidden in built-up areas and where a solid line runs down the middle of the road. It is illegal to park within 10ft of a fire hydrant or a lowered kerbs, and NEVER park in front of s yellow painted kerb - they are stopping points for emergency vehicles and you will be towed away. Never park on a kerb, either. Seat belts are compulsory, while child seats MUST be used for children under four and can be hired from the car companies. You must put your lights on in the rain, and you MUST park bonnet first. Reversed parking is frowned upon because number plates are often found only on the rear of cars and patrolling police cars like to be able to read them without the officers having to stop and walk round the car. If you park parallel to the kerb you must be facing in the direction of traffic Don't Drink and Drive. Florida has strict laws, with penalties of up to six months in prison for first-time offenders. The legal limit for the blood-alcohol level is lower than in Britain, so it is safer not to drink at all if you are driving. It is also illegal to carry open containers of alcohol in the car itself In the unlikely event of having an accident, no matter how minor, the police must be contacted before the cars can be moved (except on the busy I4). Car-hire firms will insist on a full police report for the insurance paperwork. In the case of a breakdown, there should be an emergency number for the hire company among their essential literature, or, if you are on a major highway, raise the bonnet of your car to indicate a problem and wait for one of the frequent police patrol cars to stop for you. Remember, also, always to carry your driving licence and your hire agreement forms with you in case you are stopped by the police. Should you be pulled over, remain in your car with your hands on the wheel and be polite to the officer who comes over. |
