You should not travel without good insurance - especially medical cover - you should also not pay over the odds for it. Tour operators are notoriously expensive or may imply you need to buy their insurance policy when you don't. In all cases make sure your policy covers you in the USA for: medical cover of at least £2 million; Personal liability up to £2 million (though this won't cover driving abroad. You would still need Supplementary Liability Insurance with your car hire firm); cancellation or curtailment cover up to £4,000; personal property cover up to £1,500 (but check on expensive individual items like cameras, as most policies limit single articles to £250); cash and document cover, including your passport and tickets; and finally that the policy gives you a 24-hour emergency helpline |
